A downloadable game

Nørwegian Surreal covers games under the umbrella of the ‘Nordic Dreaming’ style of play – a term coined by Matthijs Holter in his game the Society of Dreamers.

I’m grateful to my collaborators on this project:

  • Steve Dempsey contributed Tbilisi!, a roleplaying game based on the principles of Georgian Dada.
  • Ole Peder Giæver contributed the Nordic LARP Small Talk, along with advice and inspiration and an interview about the use of cards in Itras By, the RPG he co-authored with Martin Bull Gudmundsen.
  • Matthijs Holter contributed an article on status in smaller creative communities, the Nordic LARP I Love You! and an interview about the influence of cards on the development of both Itras By and Draug II.
  • Elizabeth Lovegrove contributed her short game Job Interview, about applicants to a gated Utopia.
  • Ralph Lovegrove contributed an essay about the use of cards in a variety of games, including Lace & Steel, Everway and Itras By.
  • Jeanette McCulloch provided much of the art for the issue, ranging from line drawings to full-colour paintings.
  • Tore Nielsen contributed A Wizard at the Mountain of Solitude, a story about a wizard’s search for enlightenment.
  • John Rose contributed original collage illustrations.

An A5-format PDF of 64 pages is probably at the limits of desktop publishing but it’s possible to print this out as a zine if you wish to do so. You'll need to view or print the file in Adobe Acrobat in order to avoid the grey blemishes that show in some preview readers, such as Chrome.

Information about the Society of Dreamers is here: https://societyofdreamers.wordpress.com/about/

Itras By is available over DriveThruRPG: https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/107617/itras-by-english
